INTRODUCTION:
Can
you control how far the cue ball will roll, after you hit the object ball?
This
was discussed in a previous Tip (#90), but I wanted to break it down even to a
simpler
piece:
how far will the cue ball roll, when you hit itperiod.
TECHNIQUE:
Heres the
drill according to Dr. Dave.
1. Place the CB on the headstring.
2. Use your most comfortable and accurate tip position. An
above-center hit creating immediate CB roll will give you the best speed
control.
3. Start with the first speed (1: very slow).
4. Stroke the shot, having the CB stop within 1-3 inches of
position 1.
5. Repeat until you get two consecutive successful attempts.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 for the next speed.
7. After succeeding at the fastest speed (6), go back to step 3.
(Note: beginners may find it easier to start with the #6
speed, and work your way down
to the slower speed shots; try it one way, and if you have trouble
getting the hang of it,
flip it around and practice it in the reverse order! No big
deal!)
Use this
diagram to relate to the steps above:

Then take
it to the next level of cue-ball control
1)
Hit the cue ball
slow enough that it doesnt even hit the end rail come to rest about 1 diamond
before the end rail.
2)
Repeat, a little
slower, sending the cue ball only as far as the spot (2nd diamond
from end rail).
3)
Same thing, 3rd
diamond back,
4)
Etc, etc. slowing
it down until you can hit that cue ball and send it only an inch or two!
Practice
shooting slow shots like this, and your ability to play safeties
will improve dramatically!!!
Guaranteed!!!
